Local report: BC to honor '78 state champion basketball team tonight
By The Bakersfield Californian
The state champion 1977-78 Bakersfield College men's basketball team will be honored tonight during halftime of the BC game vs. L.A. Valley.
Ralph Krafve, the head coach of that team, and Mark Hutson, who was an assistant coach and recently won his 500th game as a high school head coach, are scheduled to attend, along with several players from that team that went 33-2.
That team had four returning starters from the previous season's squad that went 27-4. Dean Jones, who succeeded Krafve as the BC head coach, was the starting point guard on the state championship team and was the state JC player of the year. Todd Ward, a 6-foot-3 forward, and Don Youman, who was MVP of the state tournament, were other key players on that team.
A banner honoring that team will be unveiled during halftime of the men's game. Nine of the 12 players from that team, and their families, are expected to attend. The event is also open to any former BC men's and women's players from any season.
