'Gades get relief in season-opening baseball win

Bakersfield College baseball coach Tim Painton promises the Renegades will have some offensive prowess this season.
There wasn't much hitting in Friday's season-opener, but the pitching didn't need much help, and the Renegades posted a 2-0 win over Golden West College at blustery Gerry Collis Field.

BC vs Golden West Baseball Bakersfield College's #7 Jake Verdugo goes on a wild pitch; #18 Golden West catcher Chase Harrison recovers it in time to get Verdugo out at home.
"Our pitching did an outstanding job tonight," Painton said. "There wasn't a lot of offense on both sides. Both teams pitched well. We pitched outstanding tonight and so did they."
Painton's son, Tyler, got the win with six shutout innings. Phillip Valos tossed 12â3 innings, Justin Kelly got the final out to end a Golden West threat in the eighth and Ryan Stapp threw a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.
The BC foursome allowed five singles, walked three and struck out seven.
Golden West's three pitchers scattered three hits, but that was enough for the Renegades.
In the first, Golden West starter Jason Deitrich hit Mike Spingola and Elijah Trail with one out and Blayne Ontiveros chopped an RBI single up the middle.
"It's hard to believe that one run would hold up," Tim Painton said.
Jordan Turner slammed a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh for the final BC run. Turner, a right fielder from Stockdale High, said he only hit four home runs last season as a high school senior.
"I knew I squared it up," Turner said. "I was thinking double. I had no idea it was a home run until I saw the umpire signaling."
Turner, a left-handed batter, hit his homer to the opposite field. A stiff breeze blowing out to left field helped carry the ball out of the park.
"The home run was huge," Tim Painton said. "The difference between a 1-run lead and a 2-run lead is huge."
But the pitching dominated.
Tyler Painton, a left-hander, did not pitch last season when he was at the University of San Diego because of biceps tendinitis. Friday was his first pitching appearance in a game in 11â2 years, he said.
"I was more excited than anything," Tyler Painton said. "I was a little nervous all week as I was thinking about it."
Golden West had scoring chances against Painton in the fifth and sixth. Painton struck out Jason Aden with runners on first and third to end the fifth, then induced a foul popout to Blake Cooper with runners on first and second to end the sixth.
Just before facing Cooper, Tim Painton went to the mound to speak with his son and catcher Brock Allen.
"He just told me this was the last guy I was going to face so go after him hard," Tyler Painton said.
Cooper had another chance in the eighth when Golden West had runners on second and third with none out.
Kelly, a left-handed reliever, replaced Valos and threw his first three pitches out of the strike zone. Kelly recovered and struck out Cooper to end the inning.
BC plays host to Irvine Valley at 7 tonight.
