SANTA CLARITA -- One team seemed full of life and enthusiasm. The other looked lethargic.

It was College of the Canyons that had all the emotion that counted Saturday night, and the Cougars converted that into points and routed Bakersfield College 42-14 Saturday night at Cougars Stadium.

It was the fourth straight loss for BC (1-4, 0-2 National Northern Conference).

"We have certainly lost our identity of who we are and where we come from," BC coach Jeff Chudy said. "We don't play like a Bakersfield College team right now."

The 28-point defeat was the largest in Chudy's 10 seasons as BC's head coach. It's the largest margin in a defeat since Cerritos beat BC 35-0 on opening night in 2002.

"We do a lot of things wrong that inhibits us from progressing as a team and we've got to get that stuff corrected," Chudy said.

"We're winning in the wrong areas. We're winning in the turnover area (BC has 10 turnovers this season to opponents' five), and we're winning in making dumb penalties.

"Sometimes those penalties are like turnovers.

"So we're not characteristic of a Bakersfield College football team and until we embrace our identity of who we really are, we will continue to struggle."

Chudy added: "We've got to remember who we're playing for. We're playing for a community where football is important. And we haven't played like that the last couple of weeks."

BC was coming off a 24-16 loss to Ventura one week earlier when it held Ventura scoreless in the second half.

"I don't want to take anything away from those guys. They play hard. They're well coached," Chudy said of Canyons. "But, hey, physically we're not 28 points in the hole against these guys. But we play like it."

BC had a golden opportunity to take an early lead when the Cougars fumbled a punt following BC's first possession and the Renegades recovered. It was the BC defense's first recovery of an opponent's fumble this season.

The Renegades eventually reached the goal line and had a first down, but freshman running back Preston Hodges fumbled and Canyons recovered to end the threat.

It was scoreless entering the second quarter when Preston lost another fumble, this time at the BC 20-yard line. Linebacker Austin Murillo scooped up the ball and raced into the end zone for the first score of the night.

That seemed to perk up Canyons and cast a pall on BC.

'We had a chance. We put ourselves in a great position, on the one-foot line and we fumbled the ball," Chudy said. "Then we fumble it again."

The Renegades fell behind 14-0 before Brock Martin's 51-yard punt return set up a 49-yard scoring drive, capped by Hodges' 7-yard touchdown run with 3:36 left in the first half.

But Canyons came right back, driving 72 yards on seven plays with a key pass interference penalty mixed in. Louis Gipson's leaping 13-yard touchdown catch in the left corner of the end zone gave Canyons a 21-7 halftime lead.

The Cougars got the second-half kickoff and drove 70 yards in 12 plays, with running back Matt Bowen scoring on a 10-yard run.

That made it 28-7 and the Renegades would only score once more, late in the fourth quarter when Canyons' backups were playing defense. Martin caught a 8-yard TD pass from quarterback Cruise Adams with 2:26 left in the game.

Hodges finished with 78 yards on 24 carries. Adams was 11-of-21 for 136 yards and a touchdown.

Canyons did not break off huge yardage plays, just methodical, consistent gains that kept moving the chains.

The Cougars had 68 offensive plays to BC's 52 with a 26-13 edge in first downs and more than 10-minute edge in time of possession.
