Local report: Condors to announce new GM on Thursday

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

For the past 15 years, the Bakersfield Condors have never employed a separate general manger to be in charge of hockey operations, as the duty has always fallen to Condors president Matthew Riley, or the coach.

That will change on Thursday when the Condors will announce a new GM to head up hockey operations.

"This is basically an additional person to oversee the hockey operations and be in charge of the hockey operations, which would entail hiring the coach, and all the recruiting," Riley said.

The Condors announced March 30 that they were not renewing the contract of Matt O'Dette, who has coached the past two seasons, and last Tuesday Riley said the organization was going to revamp its hockey operations.

"Coaching's a pretty big job in itself; having a coach responsible for all the recruiting and everything else is a pretty big task," Riley said. "This gives the coach more ammunition, if you will.

"This is step one in a reinvention of our hockey operation department."

The first job of the new GM, Riley said, would be to hire a new coach "as soon as possible while still being able to pick the right guy."

The announcement will be made at 1 p.m. in the front concourse of Rabobank Arena and is open to the public.
