Local report: Clutch free throws save Jam in opener

HIDALGO, Tex. -- Renaldo Major made a free throw after a technical foul and Damion James made 1-of-2 from the line to account for the only points in the final minute as the Bakersfield Jam held on for a 115-113 victory over the Rio Grande Valley Vipers at State Farm Arena in Friday's season opener.
Bakersfield led 111-103 with 3:41 to play, but the Vipers followed with a 10-2 run to tie the score at 113 with 1:03 left.
Major finished with a team-high 20 points along with six rebounds and three steals, while James added 18 points and seven rebounds for the Jam.
Brian Butch had 14 points and 15 rebounds as one of seven Bakersfield players in double figures in scoring.
JC men's basketball
Otis Barrow scored 24 points to lead San Diego Mesa to a 92-79 victory over Bakersfield College in the BC Thanksgiving Tournament at the Gil Bishop Sports Center.
BC (0-3) led most of the second half before Mesa tied it at 74 on a layup with seven seconds left. The Renegades missed a final shot in regulation.
R'Mand Harp scored 20 points and Conroy Lester (14) for BC. T.J. Jackson (12) and Gerald Bates (11) were the other Renegades in double figures.
BC plays Merritt College at 1 p.m. today, and Mesa (2-2), which outscored BC 18-5 in OT, will face Allan Hancock for the tourney title at 3.
