Hollis named defensive player of year in NNC

Bakersfield College defensive end Keylon Hollis has been selected Defensive Player of the Year in a unanimous vote by National Northern Conference coaches.

Hollis, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound sophomore from Houston, led the NNC with 121/2 sacks and led BC with 161/2 tackles for losses.

He is among five BC defensive players to earn all-conference first-team honors.

The Renegades also had six first-team players on offense.

Other defenders to earn All-NNC honors are sophomore defensive tackle John Oglesby, who was second on the Renegades with 71 tackles; freshman inside linebacker Grant Campbell, the BC leader with 86 tackles; outside linebacker Ozzy Sombo, who had 21/2 sacks and 59 tackles; and cornerback Mercy Maston, a sophomore who had two interceptions and a blocked kick.

The offensive players who earned first-team honors included three unanimous picks: sophomore running back Jalen Sykes, who has 1,169 rushing yards, added 15 receptions for 143 yards and has scored 10 touchdowns; freshman wide receiver Marquise Johnson, who has 20 catches for 493 yards (a 24.6 average) and eight touchdowns; and sophomore tight end Michael Dunn, the BC leader with 31 receptions, who also has 557 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

The other first-team picks are sophomore offensive guard Brandon Sarabia, sophomore quarterback Brian Burrell, who has thrown for 2,208 yards and 23 touchdowns; and freshman running back Curtis McGregor, who has 769 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

Second-team picks are sophomore offensive tackle Roberto Figueroa and two freshmen defenders: tackle Clint Carter and safety Chris Hannble.

BC placed second in the NNC with a 5-1 record. Now 9-2 overall, the Renegades travel to Mount San Antonio College (11-0) on Saturday at 6 p.m. for the Southern California championship.
