Cal State Bakersfield senior midfielder Erica Shelton has been named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for women's soccer.
Shelton, a Stockdale High graduate, had three goals in Friday's season-opening 4-1 win over Southern Utah. She added an assist in Sunday's 5-2 loss to Cal Poly.
It was the first hat trick in Shelton's collegiate career.
Pitcher Martin honored
Ridgecrest native and former Burroughs High pitcher J.D. Martin of the Triple-A Durham (N.C.) Bulls has been named Most Valuable Pitcher of the International League.
Martin set a Bulls Triple-A era single-season record with his 15th win on Aug. 18, and at 15-4 has three more victories than the next closest pitcher in the league.
Martin twice this season was named Pitcher of the Week in the IL and also was honored as Topps/IL Player of the Month for July. He also pitched a scoreless inning in the Triple-A All-Star Game in Reno after being voted to the IL's starting squad.
Martin is in the league's top 10 in ERA (2.84), games started (25), innings pitched (152.0) and strikeouts (111).
Blaze falls to Ports
Josh Bowman pitched a five-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks to lead the Stockton Ports to a 3-1 victory over the Blaze in a California League baseball game at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
Bruce Maxwell had two hits, including a solo home run in the sixth inning, for the Ports (67-67).
Juan Silverio hit a solo homer in the first inning for Bakersfield, and Kyle Waldrop added two hits.
Former Liberty High and Bakersfield College standout Brent Peterson was promoted to the Blaze from Class-A Dayton (Ohio). He'll play second base.
