Local report: Belaustegui homers to lift Taft

Pierce Belaustegui hit a two-out, three-run homer run in the eighth inning to lead Taft College past the state's No. 6-ranked Merced 6-5 Tuesday in a Central Valley Conference baseball opener at Merced.
Belaustegui's homer broke a 3-3 tie, scoring former Stockdale High player Matt Packer who had walked, and former Tehachapi High player Sean Arbaut, who had been hit by a pitch.
Former Foothill player Forrest Smith had two RBIs for the Cougars (5-5).
The teams meet again at 2 p.m. Thursday at Taft.
CSUB golf
INDUSTRY HILLS -- CSUB's Patrick Bell finished the third and final day of the Folino Invitational in a tie for 31st place with a three-round score of 232 at Industry Hills Golf Course.
After opening rounds of 77 and 73, Bell struggled in round three with an 82, but still turned in the lowest score for the 'Runners. Jason Errecart tied for 35th place with a 235 (81-74-80).
The Roadrunners finished ninth in the 10-team tournament.
"We didn't play very well," CSUB men's coach Dave Barber said in a release. "The golf course was very difficult and we just didn't handle it very well. We have a lot of work to do before our next tournament."
The CSUB women were led by Vanessa Boileau, who tied for 33rd place with a three-day total of 241.
Boileau carded scores of 77 and 84 in the opening two rounds before posting an 80. As a team, CSUB took 12th place.
"We played pretty much close to our average," CSUB women's coach Tony Bernardin said in a release. "The girls learned a lot from this golf course. It was challenging and basically treacherous and it is a good experience of them. We are bonding as a team and pulling for each other, which is great to see. I am happy with the camaraderie and the team aspect in what we are trying to build."
JC basketball
Bakersfield College basketball player Conroy Lester, who averaged 19 points and eight rebounds per game, was named to the All-Western State Conference team.
Lester, a 6-foot-5 freshman out of Foothill High, scored a season-high 30 points in the Renegades' final game of the year Saturday at West L.A. College.
BC freshmen Duncan Schramm earned honorable mention All WSC recognition.
NBA D-League
Bakersfield Jam guard Osiris Eldridge will participate in the Dream Factory Dunk Contest and Shooting Stars competition this weekend at the NBA D-League All-Stars Event in Orlando, Fla.
Eldridge and three other contestants will showcase their dunking skills in a two-round competition that allows each player to be creative with their dunks and compete for the title.
In the Shooting Stars competition, 12 players will compete in four teams of three in a two-round timed shooting event.
The contest features six numbered shooting locations of increasing difficulty, with each team attempting to make all shots in numeric order in the fastest time.
