Local report: Taft College earns CVC basketball honors as it prepares for playoffs

It was a weekend of good news for the Taft College women's basketball team, which learned it earned a berth in the state playoffs, and also that four of its players, plus coach Tyrone Taylor, earned all-conference honors.

The 11th-seeded Cougars (19-9, 7-2 Central Valley Conference), who finished second in the CVC, will visit No. 6-seeded Sierra College in Rocklin at 7 p.m. Saturday in a first-round Northern Cal playoff game.

Taft's Demi Nunn, who averaged 12 points per game, and Summer Webb (17 ppg) were first-team all CVC selections, and Taylor was honored as CVC co-coach of the year with first-place Fresno City's Brian Tessler.

Taft's Marissa Morones (7 ppg) and Lavera Robertson (11 ppg.) were second-team all-CVC picks.

The Bakersfield College women's team did not earn one of 18 playoff spots.

BC concluded its season by winning six of its last seven games to pull into a first-place tie with College of the Canyons in the Western State Conference Southern Division. Canyons was awarded the league's playoff spot and is seeded 12th.

CSUB golf

INDUSTRY HILLS -- The CSU Bakersfield men's golf team was in ninth place through the second round at the 10-team Folino Men's Invitational at Industry Hills Golf Club.

The Roadrunners, who shot 314 on Sunday, had a 311 Monday, giving them a 625 two-day score.

The tournament concludes today.

Patrick Bell had CSUB's best round of the day, a 73, and he's at 150 for both rounds.

Jason Errecart shot a 74 and is at 155; Matt Hammons shot 80 and is at 160; Chase Goodvin shot 84 and is also at 160; and Dylan Lyn had his second straight 85 and is at 170.

Long Beach State leads with a 583. Long Beach State's Kevin Lim and Pepperdine's Josh Anderson share the individual lead with 2-under 142s.

NBA D-League

The Bakersfield Jam committed 20 turnovers and was outrebounded 50-39 in a 114-101 NBA D-League loss to the Springfield Armor at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass.

Guard Osiris Eldridge scored 22 points and forward Renaldo Major added 21 for Bakersfield (17-15).

Guard Jerry Smith had 24 points, and center Jeff Foote and forward Dennis Horner had 21 apiece for Springfield (21-13), which outscored the Jam 37-19 in the fourth quarter

The Jam led 55-47 at halftime.

No Jam player had more than seven rebounds.
