Local report: Memorial service today for former swim coach

A memorial service will be held today at 10:30 a.m. for Owen Nelson, who coached hundreds of youth swimmers in Bakersfield over 30 years.

Nelson, 73, died on June 25.

He coached swimmers at Beale and Jefferson parks and also coached for Bakersfield Swim Club, the Golden Empire swim team, the Park Stockdale swim team and at West High.

The memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 1900 Baker St.

"He was an incredible role model for a lot of youth swimmers," said Centennial High swim coach David Graves. "Defintely one of the pillars of the swimming community."

Nelson was born in Modesto and moved with his family to Bakersfield when he was 2. He graduated from East High and attended Bakersfield College. He taught in the Bakersfield City School District for 27 years.

BC's DelaRosa to swim for Concordia

Joshua DelaRosa, who was fifth in the California Community College Swimming Championships last spring in the 200-yard backstroke, will sign a letter of intent with Concordia-Irvine University today, according to his father, Joe.

DelaRosa, a 2011 Shafter High graduate, was the South Sequoia League's outstanding swimmer and an All-Area pick his senior year. He set two BC records. He competes in the sprint freestyle races in addition to the backstroke and also competed in the individual medley at BC.

CSUB water polo player Sam Shead honored

Cal State Bakersfield senior Sam Shead has been selected honorable mention All-America by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches.

Shead, from Johannesburg, South Africa, played in all 36 matches for CSUB last season. She had 43 goals and 22 assists and led the Roadrunners with 55 steals. She is the eighth Roadrunner to earn All-America honors since the water polo program started in 1998.

CSUB was 12-24 last season, including 0-6 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Academic honors for four CSUB golfers

Four Cal State Bakersfield players have been selected to the America Sky Men's Golf Conference All-Academic Team.

The 12-member conference had 50 all-academic players, who each had to post at least a 3.2 grade point average.

The four Roadrunners honored were senior Matt Hammons, junior Chase Goodvin, sophomore Dylan Lym and freshman Matthew Deford.

Junior rodeo todayat Tejon Ranch

The third annual Tejon Ranch Junior Rodeo takes place today and Sunday at The Tejon Ranch Equestrian Center at 1401 Crane Canyon Road in Lebec.

The largest event of it's kind on the West Coast, the TRJR includes 26 events in four age categories from age 3 (Little Britches, stick horse events) through age 18 and includes a benefit Team Sorting and barbecue sponsored by Harris Ranch tonight.

Competitors come from Kern, Santa Barbara, L.A., Riverside, Ventura, and San Bernardino counties.

Admission is free and there will be concessions. Rodeo starts daily at 8:30 and runs until approximately 4:30 pm.

Staged by the Antelope Valley Youth Rodeo Assocociation, the event Valley Youth Rodeo Association, the event is partnering with the John Wayne Cancer Foundation to raise money and awareness for cancer research, scholarship, and prevention.
