Local report: BC basketball player heads to NAIA school

Bakersfield College basketball player Damian Robinson has signed a letter of intent to play at Montana State University-Northern, a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics program that went 23-10 last season and reached the NAIA national tournament.

Robinson, the 31st former Renegade to sign with a four-year program in the last eight years, was an All-Western State Conference player for BC last season.

Fessler qualifies for NCAAs

Fresno State senior Rufie Fessler has been selected as an individual participant for the upcoming NCAA Division I men's golf championship.

Fessler, a Liberty High graduate and former Bakersfield College player, ranked 11th among Mountain West Conference competitors with a 72.64 stroke average. He is the Bulldogs' first NCAA Tournament participant since Bakersfield High's Bhavik Patel finished 34th in 2011.

Blaze loses eighth in a row

San Jose used a four-run sixth inning to defeat Bakersfield, 6-2, at Sam Lynn Ballpark, handing the Blaze its eighth loss in a row. Bakersfield starter Carlos Contreras (1-4) allowed five runs and five hits over 52/3 innings. Ryan Wright and Juan Silverio each had two hits for the Blaze.
