Local report: Roadrunner volleyball team rallies past Southern Utah in home finale
By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN
With three players in double digits in kills and a great defensive team effort, the CSU Bakersfield women's volleyball team won its final home game of the season, defeating Southern Utah, 22-25, 25-15, 26-24, 25-16, Saturday night at Icardo Center.
Junior outside hitter Debora Araujo led the 'Runners' attack with 19 kills, freshman opposite hitter Kelsee Sawyer recorded 15 and sophomore middle blocker Molly O'Hagan added 11.
Junior setter Fernanda Goncalves recorded her fourth double-double of the season by totaling 47 assists and scooping up 10 digs. Libero Mariah Alvidrez led CSUB's stellar defensive effort, ranging all over the floor and posting a career-high 22 digs.
"It was a great night to end our home schedule on," CSUB coach Jolene Shepardson said. "We have been working on some things like getting low air and we came out and executed that. We had a good, tenacious defensive work tonight which made it hard for them to score. Southern Utah didn't back down though and I am glad we closed it out in four."
With the win, CSUB improved to 12-13, while Southern Utah, which totaled 18 team blocks and was led by 23 kills from Analaine Mailoto, dropped to 9-16.
CSUB will now hit the road for its final six matches of the season beginning with a showdown at UC Riverside on Friday night.
