Local report: Ward homers lead BC sweep in softball

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

Kassidi Ward hit a homer in both games and finished with eight RBIs on the day as Bakersfield College swept a Western State Conference Blue Division softball doubleheader against Santa Monica.

The Renegades won 14-1 in five innings and 5-3.

Ward's first-game grand slam highlighted a six-run first inning. Her solo homer in a five-run fifth inning of the second game tied it 3-3.

Katie Hoffman went 5-for-6 with five RBIs and four runs scored in the twin bill.

First-game BC pitcher Kelsey Best threw a one-hitter with a walk and two strikeouts.

It was the first doubleheader sweep this season for BC (6-29, 6-12 WSC Blue).

Pitcher Sanchez lifts Taft past Porterville

TAFT -- Pitcher Allen Sanchez gave up just one earned run to lead Taft College to a 5-2 victory over Porterville College.

Sanchez gave up just five hits while striking out 11 and walking none. Dayton Kurian went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Cougars. Taft (11-20-1, 8-12 Central Valley Conference) will travel to Fresno City College on Saturday.

CSUB women's soccer adds assistant coach

Christian "C.J." Johnson has been added to the Cal State Bakersfield women's soccer coaching staff.

Johnson has been the head men's and women's soccer coach at Humboldt State the last four seasons.

"We are very fortunate to have C.J. on staff and a part of our program," said CSUB head coach Melissa Phillips. "He is well respected amongst coaches across all levels and brings a distinct style with his experience."

Johnson compiled a 115-89-16 record as a women's head coach. He was the head men's and women's soccer coach at Cal State San Bernardino from 2000-04.

He was NAIA national coach of the year when he led Azusa Pacific to a 24-0-1 record and the NAIA national title in 1998. Johnson replaces Albert Martins, who is becoming the first head men's soccer coach at UC Merced when that program begins operation in the fall.

The CSUB women's program, which has been a Division I independent, will join the Western Athletic Conference this fall.

CSUB swimmers honored

Three Cal State Bakersfield senior women's swimmers have been named to the All-Western Athletic Conference academic team.

Lly Donohue, from Portland, Ore.; Kristen Koehler, from Yucaipa; and Jordan Reed from Liberty High were among 346 winter sports student athletes honored by the WAC. To be eligible, students must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the teams' contests.
