The home woes continue for Cal State Bakersfield.

The Roadrunners, who had led the entire second half, allowed a 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds remaining that lifted Missouri-Kansas City to a 70-69 Western Athletic Conference win Saturday night in the Icardo Center.

CSUB fell to 8-12 with its 11th loss in its last 14 games and fell to 0-4 in WAC home games. The Roadrunners are 1-5 in the WAC.

UMKC (7-12, 4-3 WAC) trailed 61-50 with 5:51 remaining and 67-62 after Issiah Grayson sank two free throws with 1:25 left.

CSUB took a 69-67 lead after Brandon Barnes' tie-breaking layup with 14 seconds remaining.

UMKC freshman point guard Martez Harrison drove up court against strong defensive pressure, penetrated past the free throw line and kicked the ball to junior guard Frank Williams Jr. in the right corner. Williams swished the 3-pointer for the game-winner.

Grayson's shot from beyond halfcourt at the buzzer was short, and the Kangeroos had the victory.

CSUB called a timeout after Barnes' go-ahead layup.

"We wanted to make sure everybody knew what was going on and how we wanted to play it," said CSUB coach Rod Barnes. "I thought our guys for the most part covered what we needed to cover.

"The guy used a lot of dribbles and ended up getting deep, and the kid kind of popped out away from that. ... In that situation our guys did what we asked them to do and they just made the shot."

That was the first lead for Kansas City since Grayson hit a go-ahead 3-pointer for CSUB with 5:42 left in the first half.

"It's a tough game. There are a bunch of hurting guys back in the locker room," Barnes said.

CSUB was coming off a 71-63 loss in Icardo to Chicago State on Thursday.

"I thought we did a better job of playing together," Barnes said. "We communicated well on offense and defense."

The Roadrunners went 15-of-15 on free throws but missed too many shots close to the basket, Barnes said.

"We had opportunities early in game where we missed some shots around the basket, and we had some opportunities late in the game where we missed some shots around the basket," Barnes said. "That's a tough thing to swallow when it's that close of a game. ... You can't miss shots like that and you can't turn it over. That was the difference."

CSUB had 13 turnovers. Grayson slipped to the floor and lost the ball to set up a breakaway layup by Harrison with 45 seconds left that tied it 67-67.

CSUB spread out its scoring. Javonte Maynor and Grayson had 16 points each, center Aly Ahmed had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Brandon Barnes scored 12.

Harrison, who came into the game averaging 16.1 points, had a game-high 19. He began Saturday's as the highest scoring freshman in the WAC and No. 8 among freshmen in the nation.

Nelson Kirksey scored 13 and Williams had 12 for Missouri-Kansas City.

Rod Barnes said he was pleased that CSUB played aggressively down the stretch, something he said has been absent in recent games.

"We didn't look like we were trying not to lose," Barnes said. "We thought the team tonight was trying to win the game. To me that's a big step for us because we haven't been doing that."

CSUB is at preseason WAC favorite New Mexico State on Thursday.
