Local report: CSUB women snap 8-game losing streak

RENO, Nev. -- Amber Williams scored on a short jump shot with 18 seconds left to break a tie and give Cal State Bakersfield its first lead of the night, and the Roadrunners held on to beat Nevada 83-80 Saturday in women's basketball.
The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for CSUB (3-15) and extended the Wolfpack's losing streak to four.
Williams, who finished with a game-high 23 points, broke a 78-78 tie with her short jump shot. She added one of two free throws with 12 seconds remaining and Ciarra Ford added two free throws with five seconds left for the final margin.
Nevada's Ariella Weidman saw her potential game-tying 3-point attempt bounce off the rim. The Wolf Pack (5-8) had its biggest lead, 76-66, with 4:59 left in the game before CSUB scored 10 straight points to tie it on Betabe Zempare's short jump shot with 1:57 left.
Zempare had 15 points and nine rebounds for CSUB. Ford, Janae Coffee and Tyonna Outland added 11 points each.
CSUB swimming swept
Cal State Bakersfield posted six first-place finishes but No. 23 UNLV won 10 events en route to a 169.5-128.5 dual meet swimming win over the Roadrunner men's team at the Hillman Aquatics Center.
Posting victories for the Roadrunners were Joao Foresto in the 100 free (46.85), Gabriel Bertrand in the 200 free (1:41.92), Mitchell Huxhold in the 1,000 free (9:25.81), Troy Nekason swept the two diving events and the foursome of Fran Cverle, Mitch Wum, Charles Yuhas and Alex Daneke won the 400-free relay (3:06.55).
Fresno State, which doesn't have a men's team, joined CSUB and UNLV in women's competition. UNLV beat CSUB 188-96 and Fresno State downed the Roadrunners 173-125.
CSUB' only winner in the women's events was Alli Gillespie, who won the 200 free in 1:53.54.
Michaela Paige was second in the 500 free (5:07.88) and 200 butterly (2:08.46) and Nicolette Goncalves was second in the 400 IM (4:37.88) and 100 fly (58.51). Delise Batiza was third in the 1,000 free (10:40.89) and fourth in the 500 free (5:15.41). Gillespie was fourth in the 50 free (24.60).
"This was the closest we have come in a dual against Fresno and UNLV," said Chris Hansen, CSUB's director of swimming.
