Austin Fyten scored twice, added two assists, and picked up a fighting major, as well, on Saturday night, lifting the Idaho Steelheads to a 4-1 win over the Bakersfield Condors.
Idaho snapped a three-game winless streak with the victory and improved to 19-7-4 overall, while Bakersfield suffered its ninth straight loss.
The Steelheads also got three-point nights from Justin Dowling and Tristan King along with 30 saves from Tyler Beskorowany in the win.
Fyten scored the first goal at 7:44 of the first, finishing a Dowling feed off a Condor defensive-zone turnover to make it 1-0. Fyten would return the favor at 16:26 with a centering pass from behind the net to Dowling from the slot to make it 2-0.
Bakersfield got a late goal in the first period from Francis Meillieur to make it 2-1.
Idaho scored quickly in the second to extend the lead to two goals as Tristan King lifted a back-hander over Stewart for his 11th of the season at 1:08 of the period to make it 3-1.
CSUB wrestling
EVANSTON, Ill. -- A quarterfinal appearance by 174-pounder Bryce Hammond highlighted action for Cal State Bakersfield on the first day of the 50th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships.
Hammond, the seventh seed, won his first two matches by a combined score of 24-5 to advance to the quarters, where he met No. 2 seed Robert Kokesh of Nebraska. Kokesh, who is ranked No. 8 in Division I by Intermat, defeated Hammond by technical fall; Hammond will compete in the wrestlebacks today.
CSUB 125-pounder Miguel Comparan also will continue to wrestle today. He rebounded from a first-match loss to win his next three in the consolation bracket. He will face the No. 7-seed Nathan Kraisser of North Carolina next.
Adam Fierro went 3-2 before being eliminated in the consolation round of 24. Tyler Iwamura advanced to the round of 16 before losing his next two matches. Timmy Box (141), Dalton Kelley (149) and Reuben Franklin all went 1-2 and were eliminated.
CSUB was tied for 21st (19.5 points) with Rider College (N.J.). Illinois (58) leads the team race.
JC women's basketball
SAN DIEGO -- Brittany Smith had 24 points to help Bakersfield College advance to the consolation final of the Grossmont Tournament with a 63-52 victory over Santa Barbara City College.
The sophomore forward scored the first eight points of the game and finished with seven rebounds and two assists for the Renegades (7-7), who play Cypress College at noon today.
Emily Parks scored 12 points and Sabrina Lopez added 10 off the bench for BC, which led 27-22 at the half.
JC men's basketball
SANTA MARIA -- Foothill High graduate Conroy Lester score a team-high 17 points, but Bakersfield College lost to host Allan Hancock, 69-63, in the semifinals of the Hancock Tournament.
Duncan Schramm added 13 points for the Renegades (5-8), who play Fresno City College at 3 p.m. today in the third-place game.
High shool baseball
Former North High and Bakersfield College pitcher Colby Lewis of the Texas Rangers, along with former big league pitcher Al Downing, will be special guests at the third annual North High Baseball Hot Stove Dinner Feb. 2 at the Elks Club on 30th Street.
Downing pitched for 17 years in the 1960s and '70s, including stints with the Yankees, A's, Brewers and Dodgers.
Individual and table tickets are on sale for the event which will feature dinner, an auction and raffle.
Doors will open at 6 p.m., with dinner and the program starting at 7. Tickets are $50 each, or $500 for a table of eight with signage. For more information, call Cy Silver at (661) 805-7705.
Jam loses; Major ties scoring mark
Center Tim Ohlbrecht scored 20 points and forward Terrance Jones had 18 rebounds to help the Rio Grande Valley Vipers beat the Bakersfield Jam 120-103 at the Dignity Health Event Center.
The Vipers (6-6) outrebounded the Jam 51-40.
Renaldo Major led the Jam (8-6) with 22 points, and moved into a tie with former Jam player Blake Ahearn as the top scorer in the history of the NBA D-League with 3,804 points.
Major, a forward out of Fresno State, will have a chance to break the record tonight, when the teams square off again in Bakersfield.
