EDINBURG, Texas -- Texas-Pan American scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to down Cal State Bakersfield 2-1 in a Western Athletic Confernce baseball game Thursday night.
The Roadrunners (14-21, 7-6 WAC) took a 1-0 lead in the second on Ross Hough's RBI single, which scored Oscar Sanay, who had singled and stolen second.
CSUB starter Taylor Aikenhead pitched brilliantly. He took a two-hitter into the ninth inning.
Jesus Garcia opened the bottom of the ninth by reaching when right fielder Chance Gusbeth dropped his fly ball.
After a flyout, Lee Rios doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third with one out.
With the infield in, Shane Ammon grounded to second baseman David Metzgar, who looked Garcia back to third and then looked at second to see how far Rios was off base. But no one was covering and Mtezgar had no play as Ammon reached first safely on the fielder's choice to load the bases.
Dillon Englehart grounded back to Aikenhead, who retired Garcia on a forceout at the plate for the second out. But pinch hitter Blake Thomas drove a 2-1 pitch over the head of center fielder Jordie Hein for the two-run, game-ending single.
For Pan American (16-23, 6-7 WAC), senior pitcher Sam Street improved to 9-0 with his seventh complete game. He retired 15 of the final 16 batters he faced. The nine wins is tied for the most in the nation in Div. I and seven complete games leads all D-1 pitchers.
