Cal State Bakersfield was coming off its first three-game weekend series sweep in two months when it took the field Tuesday night.

But there's no comparison between weekend foe Chicago State and third-ranked Cal Poly, which traveled to Hardt Field on Tuesday.

Records: Cal Poly 31-5,CSUB 14-20

Cal Poly freshman pitcher Justin Calomenti shut down the CSUB offense and the Mustangs coasted to a 9-1 non-conference win before a season-high crowd of 718.

"That's a good pitcher, a freshman who's a high quality guy," CSUB coach Bill Kernen said. "That's a completely different pitch quality you have to deal with and he did a real good job. ... It's pretty hard to compare the guys we saw this weekend to him."

Through seven innings, Calomenti (7-1) had allowed only four singles -- three of them infield hits -- but had faced only one batter over the minimum because the Mustangs (31-5) had turned three double plays.

Bakersfield (14-20) finally ended the shutout bid in the eighth when freshman designated hitter Max Carter tripled to deep center and scored on Mylz Jones' sacrifice fly.

Cal Poly, which is ranked No. 3 in two polls and No. 4 in another, is the highest-ranked team CSUB has faced in its six-season history. The attendance was a season-high 718, with many youngsters present who participated in an Easter egg hunt in the outfield grass after the game.

Kernen said facing a team of Cal Poly's status is a good thing, but CSUB's primary focus must remain with the weekend conference games.

"I want my guys to see how far we have to go if we're not there yet," he said.

"We have to stay focused on our weekends because we have to save our best pitchers for that," he said. "It would be fun if we could go after a team of this quality with our best guys, but if we don't hit -- it wouldn't have mattered tonight."

Cal Poly used seven hits and three walks to score six runs in 3-plus innings against CSUB freshman starting pitcher Alec Daily (1-2).

The Mustangs added three more runs (two earned) on five hits in Nick Rogowski's three innings of work.

Cal Poly catcher Brett Barbier, who came into the game with only six at-bats this season, hit a two-run double and scored in Cal Poly's four-run second, and he also singled and scored in the fourth.

The Mustangs had 15 hits and drew three walks off four CSUB pitchers.

Cal Poly sophomore right-hander Casey Bloomquist did not pitch. A Bakersfield Christian graduate, he has a 1.58 ERA and improved to 8-0 after beating Hawaii on Sunday.

CSUB plays Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Texas-Pan American and has games Monday and Tuesday at Kansas State.
