JC roundup: Burrell, Sykes among BC's all-time leaders in passing, rushing

By CALIFORNIAN STAFF REPORT

Sophomores Brian Burrell and Jalen Sykes, whose offensive prowess helped catapult the Renegades to the state football championship, have joined some elite company among Bakersfield College's all-time best players.

Burrell, who will presumably transfer to a Division I school in the near future, threw for 2,555 yards this season, the third-best for a season in BC's history. That trails Jacob Bower's 2007 season (3,034 yards) and Thomas Peregrin's 2005 season (2,715).

Burrell also ranks third in BC's career passing list with 3,142 yards. That trails Peregrin, who had 4,662 in 2004-05, and Stan Greene, who had 3,450 in 1987-88.

Burrell suffered a season-ending injury early in the 2011 season and will probably be given an injury redshirt year, which would leave him with three Division I seasons remaining and a JC year left if he chooses to remain at BC. But his upcoming transfer is a foregone conclusion.

Sykes finished with 1,453 rushing yards this season, the fourth-most in a single season in BC's history. That trails Michael Gray (1,923 in 1995), David Turner (1,796 in 1975) and George Jones (1,728 in 1994) and is ahead of Bruce Frieson (1,418 in 2008).

In his two-season BC career, Sykes ranks sixth in career yards (2,094). Only seven have reached 2,000 with Turner (3,026 in 1974-75) the only one above 3,000.

Other BC offensive players who cracked BC's all-time lists are sophomore tight end Mike Dunn, who is tied for 14th with 42 career receptions and is 13th in single-season catches (35 this year); freshman wide receiver Brock Martin, who is tied for 16th in a single season with 33 receptions; freshman wide receiver Marquist Johnson, who is tied for 26th on the single-season list with 27 catches; and freshman running back Curtis McGregor, who finished with 931 yards. That's the 25th time in BC's history a runner has surpassed 900 yards in a season.

Condors to honor Renegades

Bakersfield College's football team will be honored by the Condors on Friday.

The Renegades, who completed an 11-2 season Saturday with the program's first state football championship, will be honored during the Condors-vs.-Idaho Steelheads 7 p.m. game at Rabobank Arena.

Tickets for the lower level are $11 each (based on the number of BC wins this season). That price is good only until noon Friday for advance sale tickets. Call 324-PUCK (7825) for more information.

Two BC wrestlers 7th

LEMOORE -- Bakersfield College's Maxx Ramirez and Ryan Steibar each placed seventh at the California Community College Athletic Association Wrestling Championships.

Ramirez and Steibar were the only two BC wrestlers to qualify for the state meet. Both went 3-2 in the tournament.

In their final matches, Ramirez beat Cerritos' Michael Behnke 8-3 for seventh place at 141 pounds. Steibar had a 15-4 major decision over Santa Rosa's Blake Borges to place seventh at 149.

BC finished 18th with 14.5 team points. Fresno City College won its third straight state championship and 13th in school history with 149.5 points. Mount San Antonio was second with 100.5.
