BROOKINGS, S.D. -- Cal State Bakersfield came within a possession of snapping the nation's third-longest home winning streak, but were unable to convert two late 3-pointers as South Dakota State held on for a 69-63 victory Sunday afternoon at Frost Arena.
In a game that saw 15 lead changes and eigh ties, CSUB (3-5) found itself in position to snap the Jackrabbits 22-game home winning streak, leading by as many as six points in the game.
But South Dakota State converted 23-of-26 free throws in the second half to take the lead late. CSUB shot just three free throws for the game.
"I'm proud of the guys and the way they played, coming into another tough environment and putting ourselves in a situation to win," said CSUB head coach Rod Barnes in a press release. "We had a couple of chances at the end and some calls that didn't go our way."
The 'Runners played without starting point guard Tyrone White, who sat out with an illness, but freshman Britton Williams played brilliantly.
The Liberty High graduate scored a game-high 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range while also recording two rebounds and four assists.
Garces graduate Stephon Carter added 17 points, surpassing Trent Blakely and Carl Toney to move into fourth on CSUB's career scoring list. Carter has 1,275 points and is now 15 back of Kebu Stewart for third.
CSUB also had double-digit efforts from Brandon Barnes, who scored 10 points, and Javonte Maynor, who added 10. The 'Runners shot 43.5-percent from the field and 35-percent from 3-point range.
The Roadrunners return home Saturday night to play host to La Verne for a 7 p.m. game at the Icardo Center.
Women's
IRVINE -- Amber Williams scored 23 points to lead the Roadrunners past UC Irvine, 71-64 at the Bren Events Center.
Williams was 7-of-16 from the field and 7-of-10 from the free throw line to pace CSUB (2-7).
The 'Runners led by as much as 11 points in the second half, but the Anteaters (2-7) rallied to tie the score at 58 with 3:11 remaining.
Ciarra Ford sank a 3-pointer at 2:47 to put the Roadrunners on top for good.
Following a UCI free throw by Jennifer Tsurumoto, CSUB scored the next seven points to open a 68-59 lead with 56 seconds remaining. UCI closed the gap to five points at 69-62 on a layup by Anete Klintsone with 16 seconds left.
Tyonna Outland added 17 points for CSUB. Camille Buckley led UCI with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Rebounding and free throw shooting were keys for the Roadrunners. CSUB outrebounded the Anteaters 37-31 and held a 33-24 advantage in free throw attempts.
The teams will meet again Dec. 28 in Bakersfield. CSUB plays Thursday at Air Force.
