Bakersfield College wins state football title
By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN
Bakersfield College won the first official state title in school history, 35-14 over City College of San Francisco, on Saturday in front of nearly 12,000 fans at Memorial Stadium.
The Renegades (11-2) jumped to a 28-0 lead in the first 25 minutes of the game, with local players Jalen Sykes (Garces), Michael Dunn (West) and John Oglesby (Highland) all scoring first-half touchdowns. Brian Burrell (Bakersfield) scored on a quarterback keeper early in the third quarter for a 35-7 lead, and the Renegades' defense held the rest of the way.
Sykes, the game's MVP, ran for 179 yards, part of a 429-yard day for the BC offense. Oglesby, who had 8.5 tackles, including two for loss, and returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, was the defensive player of the game.
The Renegades won 17 Potato Bowls and three Junior Rose Bowl crowns, the last in 1976, to claim mythical national titles. But BC's only appearances in the state title game since the CCCAA went to its current playoff system ended in losses, including the last time the Renegades got this far, in 2000 against San Francisco.
