Garces' volleyball players -- all of them -- accepted the ALS Ice Bucket

Challenge on Monday night.

The Rams, under the direction of new coach Lacey Coppolo, all poured buckets of ice water on their heads outside the Garces swimming pool.

The ALS challenge started with Boston College baseball player Pete Frates, who has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease. Those challenged can either donate $100 to support research for an ALS cure or receive the ice-water treatment (many do both).

Those who complete the challenge can pass it on to others.

Other local sports figures have gotten in on the act, too, including Bakersfield High football coach Paul Golla.

Peterson leads Blaze to victory

Liberty graduate Brent Peterson hit a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Bakersfield Blaze beat Lancaster 5-4 on Monday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

The Blaze battled back from a 4-1 deficit. Sebastian Elizalde hit a two-run double to spark a three-run rally in the sixth that tied the game. Then, in the ninth, Sammy Diaz, who finished 3-for-4, hit a leadoff double and moved to third on Julio Morillo's bunt before Peterson hit the winning fly ball to right field.

Layne Somsen (2-2) earned the win with a perfect ninth inning out of Bakersfield's bullpen after Jimmy Moran threw three perfect innings in relief of starter Drew Cisco.

Solid scrimmage for Kessler

Another day, another great showing for USC quarterback Cody Kessler. Unofficial reports from Los Angeles Daily News report that the Centennial graduate completed 8 of 9 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown for USC in a scrimmage Monday.

Max Browne went 2-7 for seven yards and an interception while Jalen Greene was 5-10 for 97 yards.
