A celebration of life for former Cal State Bakersfield wrestling coach T.J. Kerr will be held July 20 at the CSUB Icardo Center starting at 3 p.m.

Kerr, who coached wrestling at CSUB from 1984-2010, died June 6.

The wrestling coach came to CSUB after coaching 12 seasons at San Jose State. The highlight of his CSUB career was leading the Roadrunners to third place in the 1996 NCAA Championships, which earned him National Wrestling Coaches Association Coach of the Year and the 2007 Amateur Wrestling News Man of the Year.

Kerr coached three NCAA Div. I champions, six Division II champions, 29 Division I All-Americans, 17 Division II All-Amercians, 29 Pac-10 champions and 166 Pac-10 placewinners. He also coached five Olympians, one world champion and five world championship qualifiers.

Patel in tie for third in Web.com Tour event

WICHITA, Kan. -- Bakersfield High graduate Bhavik Patel stayed in the hunt Saturday with a 2-under-par 69 in the third round of the Air Capital Classic. Patel is in a seven-way tie for third place at 9-under overall in the Web.com Tour event, two shots behind leader Scott Parel.

Modesto tops Blaze, 6-4

MODESTO -- Modesto tallied six early runs on Bakersfield starter Mike Dennhardt as the Nuts beat the Blaze 6-4 at John Thurman Field.

Modesto scored two in the second inning and four in the third off Dennhardt (3-6), who then settled down to pitch seven innings. He allowed seven hits, struck out five and walked none. Two of his six runs allowed were unearned.

Juan Silva and Yorman Rodriguez each hit doubles for Bakersfield, which scored all of its runs in the eighth inning. Rodriguez had two RBIs.

Kyle McMyne pitched one scoreless inning of relief for the Blaze, which concludes its series at Modesto today at 1 p.m. Bakersfield has won two of three so far in the series.

Bakersfield then has three days off for the All-Star break, which marks the end of the first-half schedule. Bakersfield trails the first-place San Jose Giants by 14.0 games in the first-half standings. The first-half winner gets an automatic berth into the California League playoffs.
