BC women's basketball team wins first conference title

CULVER CITY — The Bakersfield College women’s basketball team needed overtime to do it, but the Renegades captured the program’s first conference championship Saturday night.
Jausecca Cockerel had 23 points, nine rebounds, five assists and also took to charges to lead the ’Gades to a 67-56 overtime victory over West L.A.
With the victory, BC (16-8, 9-3 in the Western State Conference South), tied for the WSC title with College of the Canyons.
“It feels amazing,” said 17-year BC coach Paula Dahl. “We had a huge crowd down there and it really made a difference.”
Brittany Smith had 21 points for BC and Madison Tarver added 12 rebounds.
BC will find out where they will be seeded Monday, according to Dahl.
JC baseball
The Renegades and San Diego Mesa College each had the same number of hits, but five Bakersfield errors proved to be to difficult to overcome in a 10-6 loss at Gerry Collis Field.
BC (7-2) had nine hits, including four by sophomore third baseman Elijah Trail, but Mesa (4-4) scored seven unearned runs to snap the ’Gades’ three-game winning streak.
Blayne Ontiveros and Jonathan Suda each had two hits for BC, who finishes off a five games in six day stretch when it hosts Moorpark today at 3 p.m.
In Friday’s game, the Renegades rallied from an early 3-1 deficit to top Oxnard College 7-4.
Elijah Trail had a key 2-run double in the fifth to tie the game, and then scored the go-ahead run on a balk.
Brent Peterson was 2-for-5 with three runs scored, and also made a spectacular lunging catch from shortstop on a line drive headed to center field with the bases loaded in the second inning.
Tyler Painton (3-0) earned the victory, allowing just one earned run on five hits, striking out eight in five innings.
Austin Duran pitched three scoreless innings in relief for BC. He has yet to allow a run in five appearances, totalling eight innings this season.
Taft College split a doubleheader, defeating Lassen College 10-1, and then losing to Monterey 7-1.
The Cougars (4-5) play at Merced at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
JC softball
Sarah Smith hit a three-run home run in Bakersfield College’s 9-1 victory over Taft and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored as the
Renegades beat Cuesta 7-2 to complete a perfect four-game weekend homestand.
Kaila Williams struck out seven and walked two as the ’Gades (8-4) put away Taft in five innings. Williams homered and drove in two runs against Cuesta.
Brittany Messer went 3-for-3 with three runs scored against Taft.
High school tennis
The Liberty High boys tennis team will play an exhibition against a local USTA 4.0-4.5 men’s team in an exhibition labeled as “Boyz2men.”
The event is schedule to start at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Bakersfield Racquet Club.
