Local report: Highland's Baier to run for Cal

Highland graduate Elijah Baier will run for the track team at UCLA after a Scots career in which he had a hand in three school records.

Baier owns the Highland records in the 100 meters (10.69) and 200 meters (21.69) and was the area champion in both. He also was part of the Scots’ 400 relay record (42.6). He suffered a hamstring injury the week of the Central Section Masters meet and did not qualify for the state meet, but he had the best sprint times in the section up to that point.

Baier will run for the Bruins on partial academic scholarships.

Stapp signs for baseball

Former Bakersfield High and Bakersfield College baseball player Ryan Stapp has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Missouri Baptist University, an NAIA school in St. Louis.

Missouri Baptist reached the NAIA World Series for the first time in school history last season. Stapp, a right-handed pitcher, was 5-0 with a 3.66 ERA with BC last season. He was second in the state with 11 saves as a freshman in 2012.

Sound swept by L.A. Brewers

The Bakersfield Sound managed only three hits in a 14-3 loss to the Los Angeles Brewers in the opener, and L.A. rolled to an 11-5 victory in the second game of a doubleheader sweep on at Bakersfield Christian High School. The Brewers swept the four-game college summer league series.
