Crisp to stay in custody, be transferred to Fresno

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

Former Realtor David Crisp, one of 10 people connected to Crisp & Cole Real Estate facing federal prosecution for alleged mortgage fraud, will remain in jail after a hearing in San Diego Thursday.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Nita L. Stormes ordered the principal of the now defunct real estate firm to remain detained pending his transfer to Fresno, where he will be tried in federal court.

Crisp and former loan officer Jayson Costa are the only two suspects in the case who remain in custody since federal indictments against them were unsealed Jan. 21. The rest are free on bail until a hearing next month in Fresno. Most had to surrender their passports as a condition of release.

Costa was ordered held because he had prior arrests and was considered a flight risk, authorities said.

All of the suspects pleaded not guilty at their arraignments.

Ten people connected to Crisp & Cole, including principals Crisp and Carl Cole, have been charged with fraud, money-laundering and conspiracy, and five others have accepted plea deals for fraud and aiding and abetting.
