Powell qualifies as Ward 1 candidate

Another Bakersfield resident has met the qualifications to run for the open Ward 1 Bakersfield City Council seat.
Tomeka Powell, an analyst at Community Action Partnership of Kern, a community services nonprofit agency, is the second person to qualify to run for the seat.
Donald Vereen, director of the Bakersfield City School District's Educational Foundation, qualified as a candidate previously. To qualify, each had to gather at least 20 valid signatures from Ward 1 voters.
The Ward 1 seat, representing part of southeast Bakersfield, was left empty when Rudy Salas won a seat in the state Assembly last November and moved to that office in Sacramento.
The council decided in January to hold a special election, slated for June 4, to fill the seat.
