Ward 1 City Council candidate Stephanie Campbell picked up an endorsement from the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce's Political Action Committee Friday.

"Stephanie has a proven track record in helping bring about positive change in Ward 1 and in the community," said the Chamber of Commerce PAC Chairman Greg Bynum, following a meeting with Campbell. "She has a passion that fuels her drive and is not afraid to take a tough stance when it comes to her beliefs of what it takes to bring about that change."

Campbell, a consultant and grant writer for nonprofit organizations, is a 50-year Bakersfield resident who lives in her childhood home.

She faces competition in the June 4 special election from candidates Marvin Dean, a construction project consultant; Efren Martinez, a marketing consultant for Lotus Communications Corp.; Tomeka Powell, an analyst at Community Action Partnership of Kern; Willie Rivera, a staffer for the 16th Senate District office; and Donald Vereen, director of the Bakersfield City School District Educational Foundation.

Candidates are vying to fill the Ward 1 seat vacated by Rudy Salas, Bakersfield's first Hispanic council member, who was elected to the state Assembly last November.
