The U.S. Chamber of Commerce endorsed Rep. David Valadao, R-Hanford, Thursday.

Rob Engstrom, the chamber's national political director, made the announcements at separate events in Fresno and Bakersfield calling Valadao "a champion for our members."

He said Valadao is on the right side of issues close to the chamber's heart -- supporting immigration reform, the energy sector and health care.

Engstrom said Valadao voted the way the chamber wanted 90 percent of the time -- and the local and state chambers support him -- so the national Chamber is going to stick with the incumbent Republican.

Valadao is one of the chamber's top five national candidates it is supporting, Engstrom said.

And, while it is true the national chamber organization often supports Republicans, it makes its selections based on voting records, Engstrom said.

But local and state chamber organizations guide the national's stance on candidates too, he said.

Valadao is seeking a second term. He faces Democrats Amanda Renteria and John Hernandez in the June 3 21st District primary. The top two finishers advance to November's general election.
