READER: (In regard to our Dec. 31 list of state, national and global quotes of the year:)

I am sorry this is so late but I feel it is important to ask: why was this quote from the U.S. Senate Benghazi hearings not included in your list?

"With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans," [Hillary] Clinton responded, raising her voice...

"Was it because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk last night who decided to kill some Americans? What difference at this point does it make? It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, Senator."

Her statement made a difference since the administration was pushing the spin of the protest. We deserve to know that the government purposely misled us. I hope this isn't an indication of the press supporting a Presidential candidate by selective reporting.

Thank you

Marianne Keathley, Bakersfield

ARTHUR: It's a great and memorable quote and certainly worthy of our list. In leaving it out, however, no bias was intended.

In fact, bias toward whom? As I recall the quote was praised by political friends of Hillary Clinton and denounced by opponents. So including, or not including, the quote, would have favored which side?

The first five quotes in the column were either critical of President Obama or in one case a set-up for an Obama zing.

Thanks for your note. We think the column was fair -- and balanced.

READER to columnist Valerie Schultz:

As is the usual, I enjoyed reading your column today (Dec. 28) regarding Pope Francis and the Catholic Calling.

I just wanted to let you know that I always very much look forward to, appreciate, and enjoy reading your Column contributions in The Californian. I know sometimes we send things out, and never get feedback, and wonder "is anyone listening?"; "is anyone interested in what I am writing?"

Yes; and yes. Just wanted to let you know that; thought you might want to know that.

Keep up the great writing!

Alvin Gregorio

LIFESTYLES EDITOR Jennifer Self replied:

Thanks, Alvin, for the positive feedback. I agree: Valerie's columns are wonderfully written and thought-provoking as well. We're proud to share them with our readers.

READER: In the Jan. 7 paper there was a small column about finding the body of "William Davis, 55". Below that, it said "The identity of the man is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin." See the problem here?

ARTHUR: Thanks for pointing this out. Clearly part of the story was updated but the rest wasn't. There often are several versions of news stories online during the day, depending on the information we are able to obtain.

There wasn't much we could do to correct it in the paper but we did correct the online version.
