Baker's thermometer

Some of the folks in Baker, that tiny, heat-chapped town 85 miles southwest of Las Vegas, want to take down their city's famed giant thermometer because it's fallen into ill repair and lack of use.

Many here in Bakersfield can identify: The two famous "Sun, Fun, Stay, Play" signs here became more trouble than they were worth, and they came down in the early 1980s. As we learned here in Bakersfield, though, travelers appreciated those signs more than we knew and nostalgia about them is rampant. So, Baker: Think before you demolish. That iconic thermometer is, in a sense, ours too.
