AD won't be missed

By The Bakersfield Californian

A major accomplishment within Cal State Bakersfield has been the departure of athletic director Jeff Konya ("Konya leaving CSUB for Oakland," July 8).

When he came to CSUB, he totally turned the department upside down. Resignations, early retirements and dismissals were commonplace, resulting in the loss of hundreds of years of experience and loyalty. A number of coaches, trainers, sports information directors and assistant athletic directors either resigned, retired or failed to have their contracts renewed.

Konya's major accomplishment appears to have been joining the Western Athletic Conference. The custodian could have negotiated entrance into "the revolving door conference." The acronym WAC need not be changed -- only the "W," which should be changed to represent "Weak." The WAC tournament winner in softball posted an overall record of 18-42. It can't be described as "Western" with additions of schools as far away as Chicago and Texas. The conference lost four member schools in 2013 after only one year of membership.

Dr. Thomas Wallace is disingenuous with his broad statement that Konya "brought in better personnel." His predecessor and staff brought the school 30 national championships in five different sports and garnered the prestigious Sears Directors Cup, with some of the staff still on hand when Konya arrived. I think the baseball team won the WAC, but very few other successes are evident under Konya's reign.

Space limits my words, or I would tell you how I really feel. My condolences to Oakland University.
