White Lane's true history
By The Bakersfield Californian
To the gentleman who mistakenly thought White Lane was named for astronaut Ed White ("Astronauts on our streets?," Feb. 12), here are the facts:
John Wesley White and his family moved to Bakersfield in 1876. The original farm was located near the intersection of White Lane and Union Avenue. Mr. White was one of the original Kern County supervisors, and that is why he was given the honor of having White Lane named after him.
How do I know? Many of Mr. White's affluent pioneer family still reside in Bakersfield. Although none have the family name of White (the girls married and the boys all had girls) we are still here. And that is the true story of White Lane.
