A nonlitigious solution to Oildale's water war

By The Bakersfield Californian

I enjoy reading Lois Henry's columns. Although I may not always agree with her opinions, I find that she and I share many of the same views. I admire the way she seems to fearlessly delve into tough subjects and situations and brings them to the attention of her readers.

I'm a customer of the NOR Municipal Water District and after reading her June 17 column, "In Oildale, war isn't over oil -- it's about water," I'm very upset! My water costs continue to rise, and now I discover that factored into this is the money spent for NOR staff and board members to travel. I'm very interested in learning where the travel took place and how it was justified on my dime.

I recently received a flier from Oildale Mutual, related to the dissention between the two companies, but details of the situation were not as clearly stated as the information that Henry provided.

In the interest of providing quality customer service, I vote for dismissing the current lawsuit between NOR and Oildale Mutual, which, as an NOR customer, I will be called upon to pay for, and instead work toward a solution that would benefit Oildale residents. I agree that combining the two small agencies and therefore omitting a duplication of services/costs would be in the best interest of their customers. Otherwise, litigation could continue for years -- adding more costs to my monthly water bill!

Keep up the good work, Lois!
