Who ran up $100k bill? Look in mirror, council

By The Bakersfield Californian

If Bakersfield City Councilwoman Jacquie Sullivan wants the responsible party to pay for the upcoming special election in Ward 1, the estimated $100,000 cost should be borne by the city council members themselves.

Rudy Salas vacated his seat to become an elected member of the state Assembly but that did not force a special election. The voters of Ward 1 rallied to force an election, but their petition ultimately failed on a technicality. It was the city council, including Sullivan herself, who voted to hold a special election.

I am amazed that, despite our patriotism, we are haggling over the price tag of democracy in this town. I can only hope that the price for those opposed to a free and open democracy is an overwhelming, humiliating loss if and when they stand for re-election.
