It's families' responsibility to get help for mentally ill

By The Bakersfield Californian

With regard to the Newtown, Conn., school shooting, I realize that just because I think Mark Mattioli, the father of 6-year-old shooting victim James Mattioli, has the right opinion, "that people are to blame," it will not change how our government will make decisions regarding a gun law. However, I hope lawmakers will consider that the families of these mentally sick people should be responsible.

It should not come as a surprise to them that their child or relative has a mental problem. Why have these weapons available to them? Our latest, now, is a young man running around a Texas college cutting people because he visualized himself stabbing people when in grammar school. No gun and perhaps weapon came from the school. This whole discussion is just a no-brainer.

Get on to these families to take charge and help before the poor sick people do something bad. If family members are at their wit's end, they should ask for professional help.
