BHS needs a boost from a legend

A fitting climax to a stellar football season by the Bakersfield High School Drillers was the announcement of the planned refurbishment old Griffith Field. The artist rendering looks great, and costs involved seem reasonable. The only hurdle left is the source of the money needed to finish a job worthy of state champions. Let me offer a suggestion.

Bakersfield is blessed by many philanthropic individuals: Jimmy and Majorie Icardo, Tom and Barbara Hardt, Marty Whitton, John Antonino, John Hillman, Dean and Ada Gay, William Wheeler, Gerry Collis, George Culver, the McMurtrey family and many others. Griffith Field needs $1 million to complete the upgrade of this historic football stadium, and there is one name missing from the list of those who have honored Bakersfield by making a significant contribution to our public facilities: Frank Gifford.

He could write a check to cover all the costs in an instant and never miss the money. Frugal Frank, the prince of parsimony, needs to shake of the amnesia of where he came from and help the school that helped him those many years ago. Remember, Frank: Parsimony is a synonym for cheap. Write that check now while you are still around.
