Great history lesson in cemetery tour

By The Bakersfield Californian

Kudos to Historic Union Cemetery and John Codd. On Aug. 4, I joined a group of at least 100 people on a tour of some of the historic burial sites in Union Cemetery. I know that I was surprised at the numbers who turned out -- but was certainly pleased.

What a great thing to do on a hot summer morning: listening to stories of the early settlers and the challenges they faced in establishing our city.

Not only did it feel good to be surrounded by like-minded citizens, but it was fun to run into old friends whom I had not seen for some time.

I hope that the cemetery is able to use the list of people interested in volunteering, including myself, to build some momentum that will result in having regular tours.

It usually feels good to be able to call Bakersfield my home, and it certainly did that day.
