A country of takers
By The Bakersfield Californian
Like many Americans, I believed that Mitt Romney was going to be the next president of the United States. I didn't even think it would be close. He is a decent man who would have made a fine president. I based this on the belief that most Americans would look at the last four years of little accomplishment and lies and see it for what it was. Wow, was I wrong.
It is now very clear to me that I live in a different America than the one I grew up in. Among the things wrong with this country is the unemployment rate that has stayed at about 8 percent throughout President Obama's first term.
But when you can get a free cellphone, free housing, free groceries, free medical care, free retirement and, if female, free contraception and a free abortion if you don't use the free contraception, who needs a job? We have become a country of takers. Half of us support the other half.
My optimism has been replaced by sadness because it is sad for me to watch this country turn into what it is turning into.
