Kudos to Laurie Weir, president of the Bakersfield SPCA, for explaining the $100 fee that the shelter charges for dropping off pets ("SPCA puts $100 fee to very good use," Letters, April 23).
The previous letter writer who dropped off her dog simply because it was no longer convenient for her to keep ("SPCA's exorbitant fee," April 20) should have been charged the estimated cost of keeping the poor dog fed, housed and cared for by a veterinarian.
I spend roughly $35 a month just on dog food alone for my dog. During the year, I pay for his license and registration fees, vaccination fees and any vet care he may need.
I know I spend more than $100 a year for my dog and wouldn't give him up for anything.
