Rep. Kevin McCarthy played a risky game and he lost. The federal Government Accountability Office endorsed California's high-speed rail project, with some concerns.
Most importantly, the GAO accepted the ridership and revenue forecasts provided. It was also concerned with future funding sources, especially congressional support.
So what does McCarthy propose doing? He wants to assure that the problematic congressional support no longer be problematic. McCarthy has stated, contrary to the GAO report, that "the Authority's plan is irresponsible and reckless, and that is why I am developing legislation to stop more hard-earned taxpayer dollars from being wasted on California high-speed rail."
So I guess if you can't beat them with the truth, McCarthy will use the power of his office to fulfill his predictions. It is a sad commentary, and if it comes to pass, I would call it a tragedy.
