McCarthy's tough grading

Congress was recently given a simple math test: some addition (tax increases) and some subtraction (spending cuts). The Senate finished half the test and turned it in without handling the subtraction problems. When the Senate's work was presented in the House, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, gave it a failing grade because getting only half the answers right still deserves an F.
In voting no, our congressman continued to sound the alarm that the Senate's half-effort failed to solve the fiscal problems that jeopardize our country's future. McCarthy signaled his willingness to finish the test. The recent criticism of our congressman's vote is shortsighted and wrong.
McCarthy should be applauded for standing up to shoulder the hard and painful work that must be done to put our fiscal house in order.
