Protect and serve what?
By The Bakersfield Californian
My heart breaks for the Harb family. Taking control of a situation is paramount for a police officer's safety -- I understand that much. But after the threats of danger are eliminated, the safety of the protected must come to the forefront of the equation. To serve and protect, I believe, is the mantra officers espouse ad nauseum, but is it to serve their communities and protect our weaknesses? Or is it to serve officers' own best interests, and protect the status quo and their egos? Individuals must not forsake their humanity to protect humanity, be it man or woman. Godspeed in your recovery, Dr. Harb.
