Elmer Scritchfield of
Bakersfield passed away July
10, 2014. Elmer was born to
Pearl and Bud Scritchfield in
the small town of Southwest City, Missouri. At a young age the family moved to Bakersfield where Elmer attended and graduated from East Bakersfield High School. At East Elmer excelled in football and baseball. After graduation Elmer joined the United Stated Army and proudly served during the Korean War. Elmer came home and played Football for Bakersfield College. and Fresno State. He earned his B.A. from Fresno State and his Masters from Long Beach State. Coming back to Bakersfield Elmer started his teaching and coaching career at Lincoln Jr. High. Then Elmer moved to Foothill High where he was hired to coach football by soon to be good friend Coach Ned Perminter. Elmer taught at McFarland High before returning to East to teach and coach.
Elmer was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Polly, son Timothy, his parents and in-laws. Elmer is survived by son Jim and his (daughter) in-law Myrna. Grandkids Kelsey, Kyle, Jake, Josh, and Adam. Great-grandkids, Bailey, Moranda, Ayden, Gracie, Jackson, Adam, Sadie and Thaya. The best friends anybody could ask for Larry and Deana Smith. Mark, Anna, Stephanie, Ashlie and Wes Meyer and a countless number ex-players.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Ronald McDonald House.
