Mike's life was abruptly cut short when the vehicle and trailer he was driving experienced brake failure, causing his rig to roll over a cliff. Despite a heroic attempt at CPR by his longtime friend, Jerry Tyler, Mike never regained consciousness. We were all taken by surprise, including Mike, that on a beautiful sunny day on his beloved mountain, the lord would decide to call him home.
Mike was born in Santa Barbara, CA, and graduated from West High in Bakersfield in 1978. He worked for Gilliam and Sons, inc. since March 1982, operating equipment and eventually becoming a Superintendent.
Mike made friends everywhere he went and will be missed by many. Mike's creativity and inspiration was evident in the cabin he built with his sons and faithful canine companion, Nala. His easy smile and twinkling eyes conveyed a warmth and generosity those close to him cherished. Mike leaves behind Kim Rivera, the mother of his four devoted sons; Russell, Jeffrey, Brian (fiancee Adrianna), and Kevin Baker who will greatly miss his guidance and love. His parents, Bob and Delva Howard, his brother Scott and Kay Baker and their sons John and Jerry, and his sister Brenda also survive him. His first grandchild will arrive in August to Russell and Caroline.
