Interstate 5 traffic slowed by Lebec fire

Traffic on southbound Interstate 5 slowed to a crawl this afternoon as Kern County firefighters worked to contain two wildfires near the Fort Tejon exit, a fire department spokesman said.

"Traffic is moving at maybe 10 miles per hour," said Kern County Fire Department spokesman Corey Wilford as he worked his way toward the area of the fires west of the freeway.

Some 50 homes were evacuated and Frazier Mountain High School was opened to accommodate those who needed a place to stay, he said.

However, firefighters were nearing containment and he expected residents to be allowed to return to their homes later this evening.

"It's looking good," Wilford said. "We're wrapping up."
