Retired Kern fire captain killed in boating accident

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

The Kern County Fire Department has confirmed that a retired fire captain was killed in a boating accident in Morro Bay over the weekend.

Chris Castro died Sunday, Fire Department officials confirmed. Castro worked for the department for 27 years and retired in January 2011.

The Associated Press reported two people on a boat came too close to shore Sunday morning and were capsized by a wave south of the jetty in Morro Bay. One person swam to shore with minor injuries and called for help, and rescuers found the body of the other person floating in the water near shore.

Morro Bay firefighters told The San Luis Obispo Tribune that visibility was low because of fog, and a Coast Guard officer said the men were traveling too fast. The Tribune reported the officer as saying waves were between six to eight feet in height.
