The new executive director of the Bakersfield Museum of Art and the curator offered insight Thursday on what it takes to bring art here during their appearance on "First Look with Scott Cox."
Curator Vikki Cruz noted four exhibitions open tonight.
Show host Scott Cox asked how museum staff "decide what makes the cut."
The process involves a lot of travel, visiting artists and their studios and online research, usually two years in advance, Cruz said.
John Lofgren, new executive director, reflected on the museum's purpose: "We are collecting for the community."
It's an awesome responsibility to be a place for visual arts in the community, Lofgren said, noting the museum is going though the reaccreditation process.
Stefani Dias, Californian assistant lifestyles editor, asked which artists the museum might be lining up for the future.
Cruz said there are "definitely" plans -- she's working on the 2015-16 calendar -- but didn't reveal exacts other than to say she's looking at California artists' work.
