He went on a mission to find the best happy hours in Bakersfield -- and the journey took him to 36 of them.
The discoveries made by The Californian's food critic, Pete Tittl, will be shared with readers in detail in Sunday's Californian. But first, Tittl appeared on "First Look with Scott Cox" on Friday for a preview.
"It was months in the making. We spare no expense for research here at The Californian," Tittl said as he held a newspaper in front of his face so as not to reveal his identity.
Tittl sought readers' suggestions as he examined happy hours, but also looked around for even more. He said he uncovered places people might not know.
Some happy hours offer good discounts; others practically bribe you to come in and eat and drink, the critic said.
Some offer very limited hours, others run all-day happy hours on particular days.
"The nice thing is if you're getting a deal, that makes you happier," Assistant Eye Street Editor Stefani Dias said.
Simulcast host Scott Cox tried to coax the name of the place with the best happy hour out of Dias, but she said it really depends on what you seek.
Tittl said some happy hours are very conversation friendly, while others offer a party atmosphere.
One spot people might not know is The Firehouse on White Lane, Tittl said. Among happy hours Tittl mentioned are Agave Grill & Cantina, Buffalo Wild Wings, Hungry Hunter and Enso Japanese Bar.
