A Bakersfield man was among three airmen who were killed when their military tanker refueling plane crashed Friday in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan as they were supporting combat operations in Afghanistan. Tech Sgt. Herman Mackey III, 30, a member of the Bakersfield High School class of 2001, was identified by the U.S. Defense Department as one of the three lost in the crash.
The mix of a dry winter, unseasonably hot temperatures and winds produced choking dust Sunday. Jeff Barlow, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service station in Hanford, said the maximum wind gust clocked in at 41 mph Sunday.
